Barnstaple viewed from Rock Park
William Fredrick ROCK was born in Barnstaple in 1802. He was educated at Christ's Hospital London.
He started working life in a bank in Bideford, before moving to London as a banker.
At some time he set-up a printing business and became wealthy, but he had not forgotten his place of birth.
He financed the purchase of land for a park, becoming perhaps Barnstaple's greatest benefactor.
The park opened on 12th August 1879. William died in 1890.
