AWAKE

Visit to Glasgow Report

We visited Glasgow in June 2023. Three nights. Out and back transport was six trains with views. Arrived at 2pm. Bags were soon dropped, and everybody was off in all directions knowing their plans to be seen next at breakfast. The buildings of Charles and Margaret Rennie Mackintosh are the Glasgow star turn on the plan of many of the groups. Enthusiastic reports on the world class scenic West Highland Line. A full day to Mallaig. This started a few minutes from our hotel. £26 well spent. Friendly taxi drivers impressed everybody. I was delighted to see just how much members packed in. Our return journey was through Lakeland hills by tilting pendolino to Carlisle, then Ribblehead route to Leeds. In the spirit of Caravan our 45 min. wait in Leeds was filled by a quick march to the fabulous cocktail bar of the Queens Hotel by back door from the station. My expert eye told me we were surrounded by Friday night customers in Friday night best whose mothers had told them to put a coat on. Reflecting on the trip Pauline Park tells me her Thai basil and passionfruit cocktail downed in five minutes was the icing on the cake. My wife Chris had a trip too many on Argyle Street. Stone cold sober. A broken humerus. Five hours in A&E sharing a corridor with a prisoner in his orange uniform chained to a wheelchair and three warders. Chris got stuck into the rest of our stay one handed, in good spirit and is making what we think is good progress.
