VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO LISTEN TO CHILDREN READ IN LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS

Can you spare an hour or two a week to listen to children read in a local primary school? Schoolreaders is looking for more volunteers in Hertfordshire to carry out this important role.
Reading time for many children at home and at school is often insufficient and one in four children are now leaving primary school unable to read to the required standard. This can have a lifelong consequence. No qualifications are necessary, just a good command of spoken and written English.
Schoolreaders is flexible and will match your availability to an appropriate, local school. Our volunteers find the scheme incredibly rewarding, knowing that a few hours helping a child learn to read each week can have such a great impact on their life chances.
Please visit the website Schoolreaders to join or call 01234 924111 for further information.

It's Never to Late to be Active

It's Never Too Late to be Active is a new campaign organised by Hertfordshire County Council to help older residents become more active. All residents registering with the campaign receive a free local activity pass for themselves and a friend. They can also get personalised support and enter a prize draw for an iPad, Fitbit or £100 clothing voucher.

And the good news is, you don't have to be an Olympic athlete to take part!

Just half an hour of activity that gets you moving and raises your heart rate, a few days a week, can have enormous health benefits. You can break it down into 10 minute chunks to help you fit it into your day.

Staying active keeps our body strong, our mind sharp and gives us more energy to keep doing the things we love.

Never Too Late is part of Hertfordshire's Year of Physical Activity and was launched on 23 April 2018 by Hertfordshire County Council, in partnership with organisations across the county.

See Around Britian

See Around Britain is a registered charity which has set up a website, www.seearoundbritain.com with the intention to provide photographic and detailed written information regarding a large variety of public venues throughout the UK. The information we provide gives a brief description, along with contact details, transport information and accessibility information so that potential visitors, including those with disabilities, can decide whether or not a venue is suitable for their particular needs.

The charity currently has a number of volunteering opportunities available and we feel they could be of potential interest to U3A members. In particular, we are looking for volunteers to write venue descriptions to accompany the backlog of photographs of various venues and/or submit photos or videos of new venues themselves, all of which can be done from home and online via our website. There are online video tutorials available to help volunteers, but we can also provide additional support via email if needed.

If you feel this would be of interest to you, we would be really grateful to hear from you (contact email address: cara_sab@outlook.com and/or support@seearroundbritain.com). Alternatively, you can register your interest and join directly via the website's volunteer section at the bottom of the About Us page.
