Upminster

Groups for you at Upminster

Interest Groups are the life-blood of the U3A without which the organization would not exist, at least in its present form. In a U3A, just two or three members who are prepared to share their knowledge and enthusiasm, or simply have the desire to know more can, and indeed should, form an Interest Group. From a modest beginning of a dozen Groups when Upminster U3A started in October 2016 we now have over 50 with more in the pipeline.

Groups are run on a entirely voluntary basis where members share their experience in particular activities with other members in the group. Meetings are informal and either take place in group members homes (often on a rotating basis), local halls, hostelries or with visits to a variety of locations, which are almost always reachable with our Freedom Passes. Where it is necessary to rent a venue or purchase supplies these costs are shared on an entirely non-profit making basis.

We are always on the look-out to start up new groups, and it's possible, even likely that your interest is shared by others. The first step is to contact the Groups Coordinator to find out if the subject or activity has already been suggested by other members. Usually the next step is for feelers to be put out at monthly meetings and in the Newsletter, or to contact those who might be interested in joining you. If sufficient people express an interest, it's a short step to getting the new group off the ground. If need be the Groups Coordinator will arrange a meeting to advise on the basics such as where, when and how often the Group will meet and to define its scope.

Putting forward an idea for a new Group doesn't necessarily mean that you will have to be Group Leader, someone else may be willing to do this.

FULL GROUPS-DON'T DESPAIR

The popularity and consequent growth of our U3A has meant that from time to time Groups do become full. Whilst it is appreciated that such situations are disappointing, they are, unfortunately, also inevitable. However please don't let it stop you contacting our Groups Coordinator, as apart from ensuring your name goes on a waiting list, if there is sufficient interest he will do whatever he can to get a second Group started; indeed, this has already been done with several of our groups.

For any suggestions for new Groups or enquiries/queries in connection with existing Groups please contact Eric Rogers or a member of the committee

If you would like further information about any group that interests you please contact the Group Leader .
