Uckfield U3A and Coronavirus Update
Further to my previous letter you will all be well aware, as we were warned, the Coronavirus situation has worsened. As expected the deaths reported have been people of older years with underlying medical conditions. Government advice has been to carry on with life and its activities with caution and extra vigilant hygiene precautions. Many organisations have now cancelled events in light of this epidemic.
Uckfield U3A Committee have been keen to carry on with our interest group activities as long as possible to allow you, our members, to socialise with each other to maintain some human contact. It appears from Press reports there will be government guidance shortly to restrict the contact that ‘Over-70 Year olds’ have with other people. For some of our members this action, despite being for our medical safety, will bring a long, lonely Spring.
As I mentioned previously, we are a unique organisation which brings people together, especially members who live alone.
It is not easy to cancel all Group Meetings as they take many forms and meet in a variety of settings. Most groups meet in members’ homes which, under current circumstances, puts the hosts and their families in a more vulnerable position to catch the virus. Other groups meet outdoors but may share transport. Some meeting places are hired public spaces.
Considering everything we have heard, the U3A Committee regrets to advise Group Leaders and members that we are closing all our U3A activities until we feel it is safe to resume them. Members who choose to meet together will make their own arrangements and take responsibility for restricting the possibility of infection. These will not be U3A meetings.
Sadly, our Monthly Meetings in Weald Hall, beginning with our April 3rd gathering will be cancelled , as will Coffee Mornings in the Picture House Restaurant on Wednesday mornings prior to Monthly Meetings.
The Coffee Morning for Group Leaders on March 26th is also cancelled.
This a sorry situation that none of us have much control over. I shall write to you when the situation with Coronavirus improves and we must look forward to a brighter, more cheerful time when we can all meet again in safety.
If you know a member who does not have internet access, please pass the news on to them.
Best wishes to you all and keep safe.
Debbie Barnes (Chair)
Computer Help Guides
Due to the closure of the Computer Group, the Computer Help Guide links are now at the side of this page. Have a look, they are very useful guides to carrying out some basic tasks, such as using Word, Excel, email, iPads and Skype.
The guides will download to your computer as pdf files, so you will need a pdf viewer to read them.
These have been written by the Ravenshead U3A, but they are happy to share with other U3A Groups.
The links can also be found of the "Links" page of this website.
