2018 Summer Outing - Poole & Wareham

Wednesday 8th August 2018

On a beautiful Summer's morning in August, sixty-one U3A members set off on our annual summer outing - this time to Poole and Wareham.

We arrived in Poole and, after some time spent enjoying Poole's many attractions (including The Poole Museum with its 2,000-year-old log boat made from a single oak tree), we joined our cruise boat, the Dorset Queen.

The Dorset Queen is a 1938 vintage motor yacht and is a member of The Historic Ships Register. In 1940 she was requisitioned by the Royal Navy for war duties and is believed to have taken part in the Dunkirk rescue missions.

Our 90-minute cruise around Poole Harbour took us past Millionaires Row, Brownsea Castle and the five islands within the harbour. We also enjoyed a delicious fish and chip lunch on board.

After the cruise we headed for the historic market town of Wareham. In recognition of its historical importance, Wareham has been designated a Conservation Area with over two hundred buildings listed as being of architectural interest, and the Town Walls (ancient earth ramparts surrounding the town, likely built by Alfred the Great in the 9th century) have been designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

All too soon it was time to return home and our group gathered near Wareham's historic quay to be driven back to Titchfield.
