GDPR -- a brief explanation

I expect many of you have been bombarded recently by banks and online shops asking you how you want to be contacted by them in the future, as well as other apparently odd questions – all with the excuse of satisfying GDPR.

Well, this GDPR (or General Data Protection Regulation, to give it its full title) is a good thing for consumers and customers in general and will affect us in Solent U3A as well.

Legal from Friday, 25th May 2018 it has the aim of both regulating how companies and the like should contact you in the future and also telling you how you can find out what personal data the company has about you and how you can get it corrected or deleted.

Our Committee has formulated and agreed our own Solent U3A Privacy Policy and Solent U3A Data Protection Policy. You can read the full details of each of these by clicking on the relevant name at the bottom of this page, but in broad terms it all boils down to four simple points.

  • We look after the personal data that you give us (name, telephone number, and so on) very carefully and encrypt it whenever we need to pass this information on, deleting it securely when we have no further need for it.
  • We guard your data well as only a few specified Committee members can access our membership database, and those on a need-to-know basis.
  • You have already told us on your membership application or renewal form how you want us to communicate with you, and we’ll update that each year when you renew your membership, but you can alter it any any time by contacting our Membership Secretary.
  • You can see what personal information we have about you and can ask for it to be corrected or deleted by contacting our Membership Secretary.

If you have any queries on the above please contact Webmaster to send me an email with your questions.
