Shaftesbury & Gillingham

We are resuming face to face meetings on Wednesday September 1st 2021 (the new venue and day will be Motcombe Memorial Hall, first Wednesday of the month)

Shaftesbury & Gillingham U3A is an organisation for retired and semi-retired people living in the surrounding areas. We aim to bring people together for learning, leisure, fitness and fun. We have over three hundred members and over fifty active groups, covering a huge range of interests. Each of the groups are run by a volunteer leader; any of our members can set up a group and become a group leader, as long as the chosen activity is suited to the aims of the U3A.

It is easy to join SGU3A. All you need to do is download (click on the blue link) and fill in the application form and pay the current annual fee of £10.00*. You will then be free to join as many or as few groups as you wish. For practical reasons, some of our groups need to limit their numbers; for example, some meet in members’ homes, where space is limited. If you find that a group you are interested in is full, please contact us. There may be other members who are interested in setting up a new group.

We hold an open meeting each month, usually on the first Thursday (from Sept 2021 it will be first Wednesday). A charge is made of £1 per person. Open meetings provide an opportunity to have a coffee, socialise and to enjoy presentations from invited speakers. Non-members are welcome to attend one open meeting to sample what is on offer.

We are a very friendly group, so if you want to come along to the monthly meting and see what we are all about then contact Sue Walker our "Meeter and Greeter" who will explain all and ensure you will have a warm welcome (you can send a message to Sue on the contacts page).

Some of our activities are free, while others make a small charge to cover the cost of room hire. Outings and theatre visits are costed to cover transport, entrance fees, ticket, etc. We always aim to keep charges as low as possible. For further details check the groups.

We publish a free newsletters every other month during the year (click on the In Touch button at the top of this page) to keep you informed of our activities and events. For the most up-to-date information please check the Events section of the website.
