SOCIAL, FAMILY & LOCAL HISTORY

Firstly, a reminder that I am not here on the 25th June and Georgia is running a help with family research session, particularly helping with brick walls, where you have got stuck. Please bring in a few copies of anything you want help with on the 30th April or the 28th May meetings, to give them to Georgia and other members of the group. The idea is that they will do some research and bring what they find to the 25th June meeting. Obviously, nothing to be found is a good result as well, as it confirms you haven't missed something. Having missed things myself and a fresh pair of eyes helping, it does often lead to results.

We continue to meet 4 weekly on Tuesdays from 10.00am at the Sandy Bay restaurant/bar. Please bring money for drinks, which we start with, before an hour or so of talk and discussion. I still need ideas for the August meeting onwards, with a member offering to do a talk, suggestions to me for me to prepare the talk, or something we can do together as a group, with several people contributing. Email me with ideas or tell me at the meeting.

30th April: me on Domesday Book, 1086. I will focus on what it tells us generally and specifically about the locality, the last real survey until Victorian times. A question (no looking it up) I shall answer when we meet: what was the biggest settlement in Essex in 1086? I wouldn't have guessed it at all.

28th May: Pam will do her talk on Pammie, the first 10 years.

25th June: Georgia and help with brick walls. See above for what you need to do.

23rd July: me on 3 famous local wrecks: the Canvey concrete barge at the Point, the London and the Richard Montgomery (in the Echo again, only yesterday).

20th August, 17th September, 15th October and 12th November: ideas needed.

10th December: Childhood Christmas (and New Year). I will start this off, but a chance to tell the tale of by-gone Christmas celebrations, local customs, decorations, family gatherings, Midnight mass, pantomimes etc. I am particularly keen on local/regional customs. Obviously, everyone can contribute with stories from far and wide.

Paul, convenor.
