Roger Smith from Stowe Maries Airfield who told us about ‘The Air War over Essex 1915 to 1918’. He explained that The Royal Naval Air Service defended our country in WW1 and that coastal lighthouses around Kent, Essex and Suffolk were very important in receiving information from The Royal Flying Corps in France on imminent air raids. He also mentioned the emergency landing fields around Essex at Sutton farm and Hainault farm, as well as North Weald airfield. As public telephones were very few at this time, these communications saved many lives.
