Ashford, Wye & District

Welcome to Ashford, Wye & District U3A

Thank for visiting this website it gives me the opportunity to explain what the University of the Third Age or U3A is all about.

The U3A name refers to the "third age" of life - the first being childhood, the second working life, and the third retirement. There are no age limits but the U3A is for people in their 'third age' - retired or semi-retired. For this reason, it attracts a lot of members aged 50 and over. However, there's no lower age membership.

U3A Ashford, Wye & District although independent is part of Kent Network of U3A’s which are in turn part of a National U3A Network, in fact there are U3A branches in most of Europe and across the world.

U3As are self-help, self-managed, lifelong learning co-operatives for older people no longer in full time work which provide opportunities for their members to share learning experiences in a wide range of interest groups. Not for qualifications, though, but for fun or personal satisfaction, each U3A is autonomous and different.

U3A Ashford, Wye & District members offer courses on many subjects with a mixture of the academic, practical and entertaining. We have upwards to 40 groups for members who have similar interests and wish to share them. We continue to believe in the U3A ethos of shared learning that generates a thriving social network but we always on the lookout for new avenues of interest to explore.

We have a programme of monthly ‘Coffee mornings’ which take place at the newly opened Community Hall at Repton, where we bring in speakers to inform and entertain us.

Beside this we have coach trips throughout the year to places and events of cultural interest and over the coming year we are planning some short holiday breaks in the UK and Europe.

Our group is always happy to welcome new members.
