Conwy recycling schemes

Conwy Recycling scheme

Many people are finding some details of this scheme difficult to understand. Here are a few points to clarify information on the Conwy CBC recycling scheme.

Your recycling must be placed at your property's boundary by 7.00am on the allocated day for collection.

What is collected weekly and what's fortnightly?

Your wheelie bin with what should be very little non recyclable waste is collected fortnightly.

Your garden waste is collected on the alternate week as shown on the calendar from the council. Up to six bags of garden waste are accepted each fortnight. Garden waste must be recycled in our reusable bags or compostable bags, which can be purchased from your local library. Garden waste in plastic bags will not be accepted.

Yes please: Bedding plants, leaves, weeds, clippings and grass.
No thanks: Soil, stones, invasive weeds, pet faeces.

Recycling is collected every week - this includes food waste, plastics, cartons, cans, cardboard, glass, paper and batteries.

Your green box - Glass bottles and jars go in your green box as before. You can also now put all types of cardboard, including brown in your green box. If your card board doesn’t fit into the green box, flatten and stack it under or next to your box. If you store your cardboard in a cardboard box, just leave the whole box out for collection.
Please do not put cans in your green box.

Your green bag - Newspapers, magazines, paper, junk mail, envelopes, telephone directories, catalogues and greetings cards go in your green bag as before.

The big white bag - Cans, foil and aerosols are now recycled in the large white bag with plastic bottles, plastic containers and cartons. This means any type of plastic bottle, all food trays, tubs and pots (any colour), other soft plastic packaging from toys, electronics etc.

Cartons means Tetrapak and laminated cardboard cartons for juice, long life milk, smoothies and soup.

No plastic bags, film or wrapping because plastic bags are difficult to recycle. Our reprocessors do not want them as they reduce the quality of their product. Most are exported to far eastern countries, where they may end up in landfill anyway. If you have plastic wrappers or bags that you cannot avoid, please put these in your wheelie bin.

The little white bag - Use the small white bag to recycle household batteries and rechargeable batteries. Attach the small bag to the big bag or food container on collection days. In addition domestic batteries can be handed in at any store which sells them and the main recycling centres in Mochdre and the old Gofer site, Abergele.

Your silver kitchen bin - All food waste, including bones, apart from liquids or oil, can be recycled. Make sure you remove any plastic, glass or metal packaging before recycling. When you run out of biodegradable bags attach the yellow label to your blue food bin when you put it out for collection.

The food waste is composted at the In Vessel Composting Plant on Anglesey, where it reaches temperatures high enough to kill any bacteria and produces high quality compost which is used on local farms, parks and gardens.

The purple bag - Textiles are collected fortnightly by Crest Cooperative the same week as the garden refuse.

Recycling Banks
These are numerous and situated locally, most Supermarkets have one. They accept newspaper, brochures, magazines, grey and white card, directories and white envelopes.

At these sites there are facilities for cans, glass, plastic, food cartons, clothes, ink cartridges and books.

Finally, most things that aren't collected at your kerbside for recycling can be taken to the Recycling Centres in Abergele and Mochdre - this includes hard plastic, wood, electrical items and furniture. Large items can be collected from your home. Check on the Conwy web site for details or the phone book for the number to call. There are always bits and pieces that cannot be recycled but please check the Conwy website www.conwy.gov.uk/recycling for everything that can be recycled through collections or at the Recycling Centres.
