L- Language and Linguistics

This group aims to explore all aspects of language and the way we use it, including conversation, language learning, language change, dialects and the language of literature. Members are invited to suggest topics, and offers to lead sessions are very welcome.
This is not a course covering a set syllabus, nor is it a foreign language course. Rather, it is an on-going meeting to explore mainly the English language; while we do sometimes refer to other languages, no linguistic knowledge is assumed.
Topics for next year might include: metaphor and figures of speech; punctuation; endangered languages; philosophy and language; language acquisition.
Since April 2020 we have been meeting by email. From September we will continue to meet virtually, possibly alternating email meetings with video-conferencing, and with email discussion between meetings. Details will be emailed to group members.
