This exciting new course will outline the evolution of European music drama from classical Greek tragedy to the development of opera from the Renaissance and subsequently to the modern musical.
The group will listen to, watch and discuss extracts from works including Agamemnon by Aeschylus, Monteverdi’s Orfeo, Mozart’s Idomeneo and The Marriage of Figaro, Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice, Verdi’s La Traviata and Otello, Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde, John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera and Brecht and Weill’s The Threepenny Opera, Jerome Kern’s Showboat, Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, Rogers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma, Bernstein’s West Side Story, Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar, Schonberg’s Les Miserables, and Miranda’s Hamilton.
