As with other European languages, you will find in German many words and much grammar is common or similar to English counterparts., reflecting the common ancestry of the two languages. We are a small group which meets on the first Tuesday each month at 2.00 p.m.. For one or two it is a matter of recalling school lessons from long ago, while for others it is a matter or learning some grammar to reinforce German learned through contact with Germany. There is thus a double emphasis, to understand the rudiments of the language and to be able to converse effectively with German speakers.
We began in December 2013, and are working through a book called “Living German”, one chapter each month. Using the exercises provided, our members are able to prepare beforehand, and if necessary revise afterwards.
Cultural Visits Proposed Visit to Germany 9th April 2017: The German Group is planning a visit to the Rhine Valley and has invited all U3A members to join them. This is a new venture for Wrekin U3A and the itinerary has been very carefully planned to ensure that the travelling time takes into account the needs; age and ability of our members with overnight stops on both outward and return journeys. Nevertheless, there is plenty for all and knowledge & understanding of the German language is not a pre-requisite for participation. I sincerely hope that you will support the Group in their initiative. Kate West is your contact but I will be helping and supporting her in this initiative.
