Profile – I am a retired teacher with a passion for Shakespeare. I have very
recently completed a three year Post Graduate Course with the Shakespeare
Institute in Stratford Upon Avon and would love to be able to share some of my
passion with interested U3A members and be delighted to have you contact me
with any questions or comments you have about such a group. Below is a brief
outline of the way I anticipate the group developing. I encourage ideas and
suggestions from prospective members. After three years of working in an
academic environment I am aiming to bring a much lighter and everyday
approach to this group.

Shakespeare might fill you with horror or intrigue you. Many worry about the
language yet enjoy and want to understand the stories told in the plays. In this
group I hope to dispel fears and find ways to make the language accessible. If you
are interested in plays, actors and staging in the context of Shakespeare’s work
and, or Tudor and Jacobean history this group might appeal.
My idea is to have the group read the plays aloud with each member taking a
reading part. If this is daunting you could initially elect to listen or read a very
small part. The reading will take place around a table. Sessions will be
accompanied by watching filmed scenes from the plays so we can discover how
actors have approached Shakespeare’s plays on stage and screen. I hope to
arrange an occasional trip to Stratford to see a live production or maybe cinema
trips to the Worcester Vue for live broadcasts. (Excursions would be optional
and more icing on the cake than an essential component of the group’s work.)
I anticipate working on 2-3 plays in the autumn and a similar number in the
spring and would require group members to bring along their own copy of the
play we are reading. It would be preferable if we all worked from the same
published work as different editors have changed lines in some of the plays and
this can cause confusion. I will give details of the preferred version when the
course is confirmed. This is not a definite requirement but would be better if at
all possible.
