Family History

St Peters Baptist Church Tuesday 10 a.m.
Leaders:
John Wrightson and Richard Dobson

The group capacity will be 25 members.
This is an updated version of the Family History course that ran successfully from 2015 to 2017. It is designed to cater for complete beginners, those of us who already have done some family history and anyone who is enthusiastic about doing family history in a setting where we can learn from each other.
Over the course of our 16 group meetings we’ll explore the main record types, sources and methods that are used for family history research. We look at what records exist, where to find them, and how to access them via the internet and other means. We learn and practice the techniques of good research and record-keeping - essential skills for a family history detective.
Generally speaking there will be an illustrated talk about a type of record in the first half of each meeting. The talks will be accompanied by a slide show and, where appropriate, demonstrations of live access to records on the internet. The talk topics will include –

Civil Registration (births, marriages & deaths)
Population Censuses
Parish Registers & other parish records
Taxation records
Military and non-military wartime service
Paupers & workhouses
Newspapers & magazines
Old photographs & postcards
Education records
Old handwriting
Wills and Deeds
Manorial records
Business and company records
Occupations
Crime and punishment
Travel, migration & emigration
Surnames & DNA-profiling
Research & record-keeping tools
Computer software for family history
Subscriber websites for family history
Understanding copyright

The second half of most meetings will be an opportunity for you to do some family history on your own wi-fi enabled laptop, notebook or tablet (make sure the battery of your device is fully charged because we will not have access to mains electricity). Our venue has free wifi access. This part of the meeting is your opportunity to do your own thing. You might decide to explore the records talked about earlier, progress your own family history project, work on a group project, learn from and share with other group members. To get the most benefit from these ‘freestyle’ sessions you will need to consider taking out a subscription to Ancestry or Find My Past if you don’t already have one.
We aim to cover most topics in a little more depth than is generally possible in the one-day family history courses periodically available at local libraries and elsewhere. We will also have ‘show and tell’ opportunities for group members to bring along family memorabilia such as old photographs, documents and artefacts, and share stories with the group.
