The Creative Writing Group is a relaxed and friendly group, a mix of new and experienced writers, some with published work, some still aiming for publication, who are keen to help and be helped by others interested in writing.
This is not a 'teaching' group, although we do have workshops on specific writing-related topics. New and established writers benefit from constructive feedback and friendly advice from the group.
Twice a year, we have a talk or presentation by a recognised local writer, for which a small additional cost of £10 is paid at the first meeting—this payment also helps to offset catering costs.
A typical meeting starts with 'homework' being read through, usually a piece around 750—1000 words, on a subject (prompt) set at the previous meeting. Time allowing, group members might offer a friendly critique of the work. We break for tea and a fifteen-minute chat, then have a session on a writerley topic, for example: novel writing; plot; characterisation; form in poetry; setting; developing ideas; with the topic often selected by the group. There follows a discussion on matters arising.
We offer flexibility with the homework to cater for those who have ongoing projects and would like feedback on specific work, if this is the case, the feedback is on the work presented. The meeting ends with a writing exercise, set on the day.
At time of writing, we hope to repeat the writing competition, which was a success last year. It's for all Worcester U3A members, the theme will be 'The First Time' and there will be a prize for the winning entry. Inspired to give it a go? Prose writers and poets all welcome.
Best selling author, Jodi Picoult, remarks "Everyone has a book inside them—but it doesn't do any good until you pry it out." Let's work together to show that story to the world, you'll enjoy the process and others will enjoy the read!
