Stephen Thorneycroft is interested in starting a new u3a group which he would like to call ‘Antiques Appreciation and Collecting.’ He has been buying and selling antiques for nearly forty years and he and his wife have built up a diverse collection of over 700 items together with catalogues and books in a number of specialist fields.
Stephen takes the view that it is possible to buy antiques as an investment but it is much more important to take pleasure from the items we collect - whatever they are – before worrying about their value. To enjoy owning an antique, it’s important to appreciate the quality of that antique.
To make the group successful, it will be essential to have a number of people with experience in collecting antique and vintage items who are prepared to share their experience, as well as members who want to learn more about antiques. In addition to having regular meetings, members from the group could attend fairs and visit local museums to study items of interest.
