‘Why did Richard III order the murder of the Princes in the Tower - or did he?’, ‘Were any of Henry VIII’s six marriages a love match?’, ‘Who were the women fighting in the English Civil War 1642-1651?’, ‘What cause links Prime Minister William Gladstone, Charles Dickens and newspaper editor, William T. Stead?’.
These are just some of the many questions the group will explore. In this course we will look at the key individuals involved in historical events. What were their motivations and ambitions? Just as significant are the people on the ground who scurried around trying to make sense of it all. Why and how did they get caught up? How much does ‘personality’ play a part?
The first term will focus on national, political and cultural events in British history but will expand to include internationalist history as the year goes on.
Group members are asked to participate in discussion and help to identify the topics we might consider; those willing to lead a session would be particularly welcomed.
