*Coxon Looking at Art
At Bromyard Road Methodist Church, Bromyard Road , Worcester on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m.
We will meet for 6 sessions on the following dates:
May 14th, 28th
July 9th, 23rd
Due to Coronavirus restrictions initial meetings will not take place but the Group Leader hopes to reinstate for later meetings
At one time or another we have all looked at a painting, some we like and others aren’t to our taste. But what is it that we are looking at?
Using images of work suggested by the group’s members, we will consider what it is about an artwork that we respond to and how we might understand pieces that are unfamiliar to us. The approach will be based on open discussion and not driven by a presentation or a talk.
Based largely on painting in the Western tradition, we will explore art from different eras and schools considering one historical period in each session. The emphasis will be on post-C19th work.
Provisionally, the sessions will focus on the following periods:
May 14th - Pre-C19th art (c. C12th-late C19th)
May 28th - Impressionism to Modernism (c. 1870-1910)
June 11th - Modernism (c. 1910-1940)
June 25th - No group meeting
July 9th - Minimalism and conceptual art (c. 1950-onwards)
July 23rd - Postmodernism (c. 1960-1990)
August 6th - Post-postmodernism (c. 1990-now)
