Brush up your Shakespeare

Coordinator: Ben Whitney

We've now finished our 2019 play, 'The Tempest'. We will meet again monthly from JANUARY TO JULY 2020 to study 'MEASURE FOR MEASURE', usually on the second Tuesday in the month, in the morning 10.15 - 12.00. Venue will be my house in Newbridge (on the No.1 bus route). You don't have to have been to previous meetings to be very welcome. Contact me if you've not been before to let me know you're coming and for venue address.

This is one of Shakespeare's darker 'comedies' with its very contemporary themes of corruption, moral dilemmas, the abuse of power and the exploitative use of sex - very 'Me Too'! We will first discuss the Introduction in the chosen version of the text, then read through the play line by line over 4 or 5 meetings and discuss the language, plot etc. as we go along, and watch one or two productions on DVD. (Some of us have already seen the recent RSC production at the Lighthouse but we will probably watch it again later and I have the Globe Theatre production for comparison).

You will need to get the following version of the text: The PENGUIN CLASSICS edition REVISED IN 2005 by Julia Briggs NOT the 1969 edition. ISBN 978-0-141-39655-2. Second hand copies available on Amazon. It will help to read the Introduction before the first meeting.

DATES: JANUARY 14TH, FEBRUARY 11TH, MARCH 10TH, APRIL 21ST (week later to avoid Easter), MAY 12TH, JUNE 9TH AND JULY 7TH (if needed)
