Wirksworth and District U3A Card School
The card school is currently meeting twice a month on Friday afternoons, starting at 2pm. This changes to early evenings in the summer, as many of the card school enjoy gardening in the summer. So far we are learning variations of canasta and whist.
Canasta is a game of the rummy family where only the numbers, not the suits, are important. There are several different versions, which have arisen in different countries. We have played versions of the English rules and also Samba, which uses sequences as well as numbers.
Whist is a game where gaining tricks is important. We play a round with no trumps then clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades are designated trumps. This is a system often used in whist drives.
The card school members range from absolute beginners, to experienced Bridge players, the aim is to learn and enjoy playing card games in a friendly and informal group. All are welcome. New card games can be introduced at member’s request. The venue rotates among members houses where tea, coffee and biscuits are often provided by the host.
Both the above games and times can be changed if more players want to join.
October 2020. Both the bridge group and Card School are no longer meeting.
Many bridge members are playing on line instead. A free site is Bridge Base On-line.
