Show Music - Convenor: David O
The group meets at David’s house, at 2.00 pm on the third Monday of every month.
The intention is to play music from a variety of shows, avoiding the modern rock-opera shows but mixing the less well-known songs with more popular ones, often including attractive pieces selected from an extensive collection that are perhaps not known to most of the group. A short verbal introduction is usually given and there is always the opportunity to comment briefly on the music played.
Sometimes DVDs of complete musicals are shown (though due to the length this might take two sessions); past sessions have included music by such writers as Ivor Novello, Richard Rodgers (with both Hart & Hammerstein), Kander & Ebb, Jerry Herman, Boublil & Schoenberg, George Gerswin, Kurt Weill, Maury Yeston and Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein, Lloyd Webber and others; still to come are Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Julie Styne and many more.
Other than DVDs, the source is CDs or audio tapes, played on a high quality sound system.
