Interest Groups

Whitworth currently has 17 interest groups which are led by U3A members. Each group is self-supporting, members share their knowledge, experience and skills with each other and share responsibility for making the group work. To join an interest group you will need to become a member of Whitworth U3A. You can join as many of the interest groups as you like, however, this will depend on availability within individual groups.

Groups range in size and meet in members' own homes or in local venues, depending on the kind of activity and the size of the group. If charges are incurred for room hire, resources or refreshments the group members will share the cost.

The venue, date, time and duration for interest groups depends on the activity, and the members, and may meet monthly, fortnightly or weekly. Further information about any group will be available at the monthly meetings.

Group Convenors

Group Convenors take the lead role in an interest group, helped by other group members as required. No qualifications are required to lead a group, knowledge of and/or experience of the subject is an advantage but not essential, a shared interest and enthusiasm for a subject are the main things.

We always welcome suggestions for new interest groups and are especially interested in hearing from anyone prepared to lead a subject.

This is a message to anyone who is convening a special interest group, or thinking of setting one up: if you are incurring personal expense to provide equipment for your group or worried that convening a group might prove personally expensive, due to the need to buy equipment. It may be that our U3A can buy the equipment and lend it to your group, for as long as you need it. If you would like more information, do contact us - via the website or at the monthly meetings.
