Whittlesey U3A (University of the Third Age) is part of an international organisation registered with the Third Age Charitable Trust. We held our inaugural meeting in May 2015.
The University of the Third Age (U3A) is a network of educational, creative, leisure and social activities organised for and by its retired and/or semi-retired members. We are the youngest in this region with fellow U3As located in most of the other towns which surround us, however, our total membership is the envy of many. We currently have over 200 men and women enjoying a variety of pursuits and activities (see the GROUPS page).
Whittlesey U3A subscribes to the ethic of lifelong learning and is for those who are retired, semi retired or no longer in full time employment. "Learning" may be viewed in its broadest term. It is recognised that there's an element of learning in EVERYTHING" we do, from improving language skills to walking or cycling in the countryside. No certificates or qualifications are to be gained, just the satisfaction of exercising minds and limbs in the company of other good friends. Don't let the word "university" deter you. You will never sit any examinations, nor ever get to wear a mortar board!
Whittlesey U3A is not just about learning; it has a strong social stream which includes outings, events, and theatre trips. Members come from an area which includes Whittlesey, Coates, Eastrea and the surrounding villages. Our annual subscriptions are very modest, presently £17 per year with a reducing quarterly scale as the year progresses. Some of our interest groups are free, others have small charges to cover the hire of premises and materials. A printable membership form may be found by clicking in this link - Membership Application.
Since our inaugural meeting, we have been able to open many new interest groups ranging from walking to Rummikub to Paper-crafting to Creative Writing, all run for and by our members. To see our full list of Groups go to our GROUPS page.
A monthly open meeting is held at Childers on the third Thursday of each month at 2pm. If you are interested in finding out more about Whittlesey and District U3A why not come along for a "taster" with no obligation to join?(On offer for one occasion only.) Enjoy our guest speaker or entertainer, have a cuppa and biscuit and meet our members over a convivial chat before deciding if it is for you. A regular quarterly magazine is produced for members. A number of these are distributed locally and can be found at places like the Community Hub, hairdressing salons, doctors' surgeries, etc.
Thank you for your interest in Whittlesey & District U3A. If you are interested in joining but cannot make it along to our next monthly meeting, you can find more information and a Membership Application Form on our Links Page. Whether you are a couple, widowed or single and seeking company, be assured of a very warm welcome.
