How Groups are Managed

Whitchurch & District U3A has 34 groups (see the Groups page for details) devoted to a wide range of interests and educational subjects. Groups may start up or change at any time. If you don't find a particular interest of yours covered by the existing groups, what about starting a new group yourself? You do not need to be an expert to be a Group Leader. Interest and enthusiasm are the only requirements, and a £50 start up grant is available for any resources that may be needed.

Membership of a Group

• Membership of groups is open to all members of our U3A.
• Members interested in joining a particular group should contact the relevant group leader
• Groups meet from weekly to monthly, in mornings, afternoons or evenings
• The input required from members varies from group to group. Some leaders ask a group member to take responsibility for one or more meetings a year. Others encourage three or four members to volunteer smaller contributions every few months as the basis for a meeting. Occasionally presentations may be given by people from outside the group. Whatever the pattern, all members are encouraged to make a contribution of some sort.
• Please remember to let the group leader know if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if you intend leaving a group.

Costs

• Some groups meet in members' homes where members are asked to make a small contribution per meeting for coffee/tea/biscuits.
• Other groups meet in hired premises and group members agree to share expenses.
• Transport is important for some groups. Those having a lift with a car driver are asked to contribute to the cost of fuel, at the currently agreed rates.

Resources

We hold a laptop, a digital projector, screens, PA unit and audio system which are all available for group activities. Groups can also borrow slides, videos, cassettes, DVDs and CD-ROMs from the U3A national office. Advice and help can be sought from the national subject co-ordinators. For further advice on available resources you can contact our Groups Co-ordinator.
