MONTHLY MEETINGS

These take place on the second Tuesday of the month at 2pm at Westbury United Reformed Church Hall, Warminster Road, BA13 3PJ. There is a car park at the rear, which is accessed off The Butts via Hospital Road.

The cost is £3, payable on entry, and includes a hot drink.

PAST EVENTS:

June 13th - Liz Argent, founder of the Westbury Heritage Society (now called Westbury Museum), gave us a talk about Westbury's shops in days gone by.

July 11th - Chris O'Grady gave a talk entitled "Fakes & Fortunes, Art & Antiques, Forgers & Dealers", after which he appraised some of the audience's items.

Aug 8th - Members enjoyed a summer lunch at the Royal Oak, Hawkridge.

Sep 12th - We had a talk about Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

Oct 10th - We had a talk by Roger Browne about the history of the jazz piano.

Nov 14th - We had a talk by John Girvan about "Street Games & Toys."

Dec 12th - We had our annual Christmas lunch at The Duke in Bratton.

Jan 9th - We had a talk by Peter Gill about the evolution of the comedy song in the 20th Century.

Feb 13th - We had a talk by Christine Mason about the British artist, Rex Whistler, who was killed in action during the second world war.

Mar 12th - We had a talk by Sally Smith about Magnificent Women and their Flying Machines.

Apr 9th - Ian Caskie talked about the SS Great Britain.

Tue May 14th 2.00pm - talk by David Bailey - "Good Hare Days."

Based in Dorset, David travels the UK photographing and working with wildlife projects. He is considered one of the UK's most experienced brown hare photographers which David admits to being his favourite subject.
Tue Jun 11th 2.00pm - Alison Warren will talk about the history of ice cream.
Tue Jul 9th 2.00pm - talk by Richard Rickitt - bees.

Richard keeps about 30 colonies of his own and a few for other people. He runs beekeeping courses. He is particularly interested in beekeeping history, books and photography.

History & Archaeology
Fri Apr 26th Visit to the English Heritage store at Temple Cloud. The store houses items and artefacts from English Heritage properties across the south-west which are currently not on public display.
Fri May 10th Walk through and around the ancient and historic village of Wellow. The walk will be guided by local historian and Wellow resident Jane Rees.
Fri Jul 5th 2.00pm - a visit to the Avalon Archaeology Centre at Glastonbury.
Fri Sep 27th We will have a guided tour of Trowbridge Museum, which has reopened in the past year following major refurbishment.
Fri Oct 25th 2.00pm - Talk by Ruth Butler on Sir Christopher Wren. Wren was a local lad, born near Warminster, who went on to great things - such as designing St Paul's Cathedral.
Fri Nov 15th 2.00pm - Talk on highwaymen, to be given by Ruby Vitorino.
Fri Nov 29th 2.00pm - Dr Nicola Tallis will talk about the relationship between the two daughters of Henry V111, Mary and Elizabeth, who both went on to be queens.
Fri Jan 17th 2025 2.00pm - Talk on the history of Bath Abbey by Jeremy Key-Pugh.
Fri Feb 14th 2025 2.00pm - Terry Bracher will talk about early crime and punishment - from the medieval to the 17th century'.
Fri Mar 14th 2025 2.00pm - Talk by Julian Richards - 'Bringing the past to life: how archaeologists use evidence to reconstruct past lives'.

Meet on the platform at Westbury station to catch the 1005 train, arriving at Portsmouth Harbour at 11.52.
The return train at 17.23 from Portsmouth arrives at Westbury Railway Station at 19.11.
