THE DROVE - a re-creation of an 18th century 500 mile cattle drove from Scotland to London's Smithfield Market. It was expected to be trouble free as Tom Perdum the chief drover had promised to train the cattle so well that he'd be able to make them stop at a red traffic lights, this turned out to be an understatement.

Our speaker will be Barry McKay; he will talk
‘The Printed Word in Cumberland in 18th Century’ mainly on the west coast particularly Whitehaven and its role in publishing and the spread of literacy in the 18th Century. This will be in the form of books, newspapers, educational texts, chapbooks (forerunner of the penny dreadfulls) and Manx printing.
