Report from Summer 2017 Newsletter
Since its inception a couple of years ago the group shows no signs of lacking in interest. With a moderate programme of subjects and a variety of literary categories for members to explore, from sonnets to scripts, we are no longer surprised at the aptitude and ability in our members’ writings, which we look forward to hearing at our monthly meetings. It appears we may have found a reservoir of literary talent amongst us however, as it is with pride and much pleasure I can report on our results when entering the 2016 Mid-Somerset Festival, when five members of our group attended the Awards in The Masonic Hall in Bath in March. Without appearing to boast (!) we came away with several awards. That is: 2nd and 3rd for Sonnets, 1st and 2nd in Poetry, a 3rd in Duologues and a Highly Commended for Short Story. Also at the 2017 Festival we came away bearing the Royal Commonwealth Cup for a monologue, with other entries coming high in the rankings. It’s so nice to have the experts’ opinions on our efforts. Most encouraging.
It was great fun. We don’t take our writing too seriously though; it’s purely for our pleasure and interest and all have their say in how the meetings are run, pooling our ideas and thoughts. If anyone would like to join us we have spaces. You won’t need an ‘ology’ in spelling or punctuation abilities; and Thesaurus, dictionaries and rhyming dictionaries I find are ever ready to help; just your ideas which you’d like to put onto paper. We hope to complete an anthology of our works in the near future.
We meet in the morning on the second Friday of the month at members’ houses.
