Congresbury Walk

Friday 22nd July – Congresbury

Walk Leaders: Jane & Allan

A walk from The Plough Inn, Congresbury starting at 10.20 am. Gentle climb up into the woods, where there are cool shady paths, steep descent above Udley, follows River Yeo (& Two Rivers Way) through grassy meadows and back to start. 5 miles with no stiles.

Report

This was a super 5 mile walk. 9 walkers gathered at The Plough Inn. Jane gave us a short history lesson about St Congar after whom the village is named. The walk leaders had decided that we would do the walk in the reverse direction from their recce. This, of course, led to a wrong turn after just half a mile! Much banter and hilarity then for the rest of the walk.

Once we had crossed the River Yeo we continued by the nature reserve and the building site of a large new development. We then headed up the path through the woodlands, stopping and resting regularly, watching the EasyJet planes coming in to land at Bristol Airport. As we rested to recover from the climb, we were re-assured that we had done all the “up” for the walk but when we got to Woolmers the leaders had forgotten the short steep climb up to Corporation Woods! More teasing and moaning from the walkers!

We were very thankful that it was so dry underfoot as we started our steep descent towards Udley and were grateful that the leaders had decided not to bring us up that way. We were now on flat ground as we enjoyed the walk towards the river over fields with a few cows in them. Then it was along the Two Rivers Way passed Iwood Manor and back to Congresbury. The Plough Inn looked after us very well. And the threatened rain came as we sat inside having our lunch. Thank you, Jane and Allan. Report by Nicky
