Summer BBQ and walk

Wednesday 28th June – BBQ Walk

Walk Leader: Patsy & Cath

We need to leave the Wells Cricket Club in South Horrington, as near to 10.00 as possible. The walk is just over 4 miles, without any stiles. A circular route towards East Horrington and then past Chilcote Manor towards the Lyatt, then through King’s Castle and back to the pavilion.

In lovely sunshine eleven happy members left the Cricket Club at 10.00. We set out from the Pavilion across the service road and crossed through the park land around the Old Mendip Hospital. Following the footpath through woods, we went through the gate and then slowly up the B3139 towards the School at West Horrington. Then we walked south along the very quiet Veal Lane, enjoying wonderful views, towards East Horrington. It was a very breezy day, but stayed sunny.

We followed the lane past East Horrington Cemetery, along Chilcote Lane towards Chilcote Manor, stopping to admire some very unusual and lively chickens, and past the top of Sharcombe Park towards the Lyatt - a beautiful wild flower meadow at the moment - a joy to see on such a lovely sunny day. On reaching the woods, we entered and climbed up to King’s Castle and then continued through the woods towards the golf course. We followed the path alongside the golf course, then, after waiting for some golfers to play their shots, we joined the “permissive path” down toward the driving range. We walked alongside the nature reserve, admiring the poppies. Finally, we climbed up back to the cricket pavilion and the BBQ, where the wonderful catering members had, as usual, prepared our annual feast and the non- walkers joined the festivities.
Thank you for a lovely walk, as always. It was just over four miles, with no stiles!

Meanwhile back at the pavilion the BBQ was being prepared. 34 walk group members sat down on the veranda for a super lunch. First there were drinks on the grass and then barbequed sausages, burgers and chicken together with a wonderful selection of salads brought by everyone. This was followed by large bowls full of exceptionally sweet and sticky puddings. We were unlucky in that the wind freshened and it was chilly so jackets were needed. Coffee was served inside the pavilion. One member dropped a diamond ring so there was a hunt on the floor for that. It was found luckily. Thanks go to Peter who once again did a fantastic job at the BBQ and to Ann and Barbara for the organisation and hard work on the day.
