Spring walk at Avalon

Wednesday 16th March – Avalon Marshes

Walk Leaders: Nicky & Peter

If the weather is good - a social walk from Avalon Marshes Centre. We had hoped to vary this walk by going the other way but we decided after our recce that this would be a repeat of our last September walk and it is hoped that members of the group who just want to have a social casual stretch of the legs or just come along and join the group for lunch will come along.

We will be meeting at the centre at 10.45 am. Parking and toilets available. You could even arrive early and have a coffee before setting off! Arrive for lunch only at 12.45.

We walk 400 metres along the road to the Shapwick Heath Nature Reserve. Sorry NO DOGS. Once there, people can do as little or as much as they want to – walk a short distance to a bird hide, walk to the Sweet Track or walk along the gravel track to sit on a bench or continue into the reserve for a good stretch of the legs. This is a wide path and easy walking. This is an out and back relaxed flat walk.

Walkers should aim to return to the centre by 12.45 for lunch. Lots of outside tables. The Avalon Marshes Hub Tea Rooms offer a large selection of toasties, paninis, baguettes, sandwiches, jacket potatoes as well as hot drinks and lovely cakes!

Report
On a warm, bright Spring morning....No! Actually, on the one and only cold, rainy day of the week, 14 brave individuals met at the Avalon Marshes Centre for an informal social walk.

We walked as a group to the South Drain and then split into smaller groups according to interests and how far and how fast people wanted to walk. Some walked along the drain to Ham Wall, others to the Sweet Track and several (sensibly) to the shelter of one of the bird-watching hides. Most people then returned to the Centre for lunch. Many of our newer walkers braved the elements and it was particularly lovely to see several of our members who had not walked with us for a while. We were able to sit inside out of the rain for our lunch and we celebrated a walker’s birthday with a cupcake and a candle!
