Maesbury walk

Monday 31st January – Maesbury

Walk Leaders: Keith & John L

Starting from Mendip Golf Club with a steady climb then along lanes and fields pass the disused S&D railway line then Thrupe Lane to Maesbury Castle. We then climb to the Iron Age Fort and our coffee stop with some exceptional views ( on a clear day) to the Tor and beyond. Across the Roman Road and passing the 14th tee of MGC making our way back past Roemead Farm along Golf Links Lane to the Clubhouse. This is a 4.5 mile walk.

Report
23 walkers met up at the Mendip golf club on a cold morning and set off up the hill towards the Old Bristol Road. We had good views towards Glastonbury from the Drove Road and were soon warm as the path was out of the wind.

There were some muddy fields to cross before we stopped for a coffee break. Our route took us by the dismantled railway from Bath to Bournemouth, known as the Pines Express. Then it was up to the Iron Age hill fort which covers 6.2 acres and where there were more good views and some welcome sunshine.

After more muddy fields and a few stiles we were back on the lane to the golf club where we had a good lunch. Thanks to Keith and John for organising the walk and to Patsy for middle marking.
