Weald

Mah-Jong

We meet the Memorial Hall in Woodchurch on Fridays from 10.00 - 12.00, usually every two weeks.

For many the name Mah Jong probably is a reminder of visits to China and Asia. It is a game that is ancient in its origins, simple but complicated and never fails to surprise - a bit like playing cards but not quite. Many have lost their shirts gambling their money away. Of course we U3A players are more restrained.

The game begins with a ‘twittering of the sparrows’. Murmurations and clatterings from those round the table trying to build a fortress with four walls two tiles deep. No partnerships take place, this game is winner takes all. Dice are thrown to discover who will be the East Wind. To find out more you may come and join us and build your own wall to keep the devils and evil spirits out and find out what Pungs and Kongs are and then finally what ‘fishing’ means and unravel the plot.
