Licenses

A number of licenses are available to individual U3As in order that their study groups and members are able to copy written material, play music and show films on any kind of media, without breaking the law.

Information about licenses is available on the Third Age Trust website. The links on the page supply helpful advice on all areas where license cover needs to be considered. It also advises on areas where licenses are not available, for example copying pictures and sheet music, which can be problematic unless you can establish that copyright has expired.

The licenses held by Watford Park are :-

1. CLA license (Copyright license) 2018-19 - for copying written material. Renewal date 1st August.
This has to be purchased individually by U3As.

2. PPL license (Phonographic Performance License) 2018 - for recorded music. Renewal date 1st January.
Arranged centrally by Third Age Trust on behalf of all affiliated U3As. Here is the current PPL license certificate supplied by the Third Age Trust.
The Third Age Trust have received enquiries from U3As who have been asked to pay an additional licence fee to a venue where they wanted to play music. PPL have confirmed that under The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, all U3As are separately licensed through the Third Age Trust and so have the necessary permission needed from the relevant copyright holders. U3As do not have to pay venues separately for this licence and if asked for payment should show them the PPL license and ask them to check with PPL directly.

3. PVSL license (Public Video Screening License) 2018-19 - for showing films and videos issued by Filmbank Media). Renewal date 1st May.
This has to be purchased individually by U3As.

4. MPLC license (Motion Picture Licensing Corporation) 2018-19 - for showing films and videos issued by MPLC. Renewal date 1st February.
Arranged centrally by Third Age Trust on behalf of all affiliated U3As. Here is the current MPLC license certificate supplied by the Third Age Trust.
