Average attendance is currently 6 to 8 people: a small friendly group with plenty of room for new faces. We have ready access to at least 4 scrabble sets, so we could accommodate up to 16 players quite easily. Our membership includes both relative beginners and those with more developed tactical skills. We take a very informal approach to the game with dictionaries and word lists always to hand. The more experienced players compete with each other while assisting those who are less skilled. Sessions routinely start over coffee (or tea) and biscuits. The game is very sociable, exercises our grey matter and teaches us new words along the way. Why not give it a try?

Newsletter Item.
The Scrabble group currently has 8 members and we are looking for some new recruits, who love words as much as we do. We could accommodate another 8 without any difficulty. If the possibility of joining us has crossed your mind, but you feel a little uncertain about the idea, let me give you some notion of how we approach things.

Up to now we have been a very relaxed group. We use dictionaries and word lists whenever we feel like it. This is because we think that it is more important to be sure that whatever is put on the board is a legitimate word, than to play strict competitive rules and risk accepting phoney words. This approach seems to suit most people who have played with us in the past. It helps novices to get started and improve their game. It also allows us to learn what some of the obscure words mean and U3A is supposed, in part, to be about learning new things. Our relaxed approach makes it easier for novices and more experienced members to play together. Words get discussed and we all learn things while being sociable.

Of course one or two of our members are quite knowledgeable about Scrabble tactics as well as obscure words. They are quite capable of playing a more rigorous and competitive version of the game. So, if that would be your preferred option we could probably accommodate you on most occasions, so long as you make that clear at the start. Equally, we can teach beginners about basic tactics.

We meet twice a month on the second and fourth Monday at 10am. If you are at all interested in joining us please get in touch with Geoff Parsons (tel. 0191 417 0217), who will be pleased to answer any questions you may have.
