Travel

The Travel group is open to any member who is interested in travel and would like the company of others to explore worldwide, European and UK destinations.

We meet together quarterly to discuss our travels and then work in smaller groups to make our plans. Our tour choices are based on the cultural, artistic, architectural and historical heritage of the places we intend to visit.

Our first tour took us to Iceland (May 2016) to visit Þingvellir National Park where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart at a rate of a few centimetres per year. We also visited the great Geysir whose water jets are considered to be amongst the most remarkable natural phenomena in Iceland. Close by is the Gullfoss waterfall where raging water plummets down over 32m in two stages into a rugged canyon, its spray forming beautiful rainbows!

At the Jokulsalon glacial lagoon you take an amphibious boat out and see icebergs and seals up close. A trip to Iceland wouldn't be without a visit the most famous and active volcano, Mount Hekla which has erupted 18 times since 1104, the last time in 2000 and to Eyjafjallajökull, which made headlines across Europe when it erupted in 2010, sending a massive plume of volcanic ash into the atmosphere grounding flights over Europe for more than 10 days.

On 5th October we organised a trip to Moscow and St Petersburg for 6 nights.

Our most recent trip is to Maastricht to see the Andre Rieu concert.

If you are interested in travel and would like to join us on future trips or have suggestions about places to visit, both at home and away please contact Jan Slawson.
