Latin
There are three Latin groups in Warrington U3A. Each group meets fortnightly in even-numbered weeks (as defined in the U3A diary) as follows:
Group I (formed in 2008) at 10.30 a.m. on Thursday; Group II (formed in 2009) at 1.30 p.m. on Thursday; Group III (formed in 2016) at 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday.
All groups meet on the ground floor in the Winmarleigh Rooms, Winmarleigh Street, Warrington.
Most (but by no means all) members of the Latin groups studied the subject at school, some only for a short period but some to O or A-level or at university, and all many years ago! Latin Group I has completed a popular five-volume course of tuition and is now studying extracts from classical Roman writers. Latin Group II is now studying Book IV of the same course, and the recently formed Group III is studying Book I. The Course combines tuition in the language with much interesting information about life in the Roman Empire over 2000 years ago. All groups, however, are free to widen the discussion and to pursue topics of general linguistic or historical interest, particularly to recognise the profound influence of Latin on the English we speak today.
Each group currently numbers about a dozen members. New members are always welcome and may join any group, depending mainly on their level of experience. For further information please contact the group leader using the "click to send a message" button.
