French Conversation II
For some time now, our linguistic leader Jane has been warning us about her impending final retirement. We are devastated but understand that her life is changing, and she is going to spend more of her time in France, where she also has close family ties. When this was made known to both groups in June, there were different reactions. The sorrow was common, but whereas the Wednesday Group A felt that they would prefer to close out of respect for Jane, the Thursday Group B felt they wanted to continue, even without a native French speaker as linguistic leader. They hope that a French leader can be found, and the search continues. A further meeting has been called for Thursday August 2nd, and a new meeting venue has been found.
Although the above decisions were made openly, neither of them can be thought of as final or irrevocable, or indeed as binding on all members. More recently it has now emerged that the Wednesday Group may have found a fluent French speaker and could restart in the autumn.
Wednesday July 4th was chosen for a farewell tea party for Jane with both groups, and again Ingrid offered her home as a venue. The spread was magnificent, with scones, cakes and a deep fruit salad. Cornish clotted cream and jam were in abundance, as were laughter and chat. It was more of a celebration of nearly a decade of French gatherings and feasts. What will we do at Christmas?
