Geology
At the end of September, we went to The
Forest of Dean where we explored the
limestone, Mercia mudstone and
conglomerate outcrops on Beachley Point
on the Severn Estuary. We also looked
across the estuary to the English side to
see the sequences there. Then a quick
stop at the Lancaut Meander on the River
Wye to look at the limestone sequences
each side of the river. After lunch, in
increasingly heavy rain, we looked at
some unusual springs at Bearse Farm
near St Briavels. First, we saw the
unconformity between the Tintern
sandstone and the older and much harder
brownstone, then the springs, which were
most interesting. We did not have a field
trip in October.
In November we looked at the strata of an
old chalk pit in the Wooodfords on the
Avon where the proposed A303 tunnel will
have to be bored. We then went to
Berwick St James to look at the flow rate
of the river Till. As we were leaving, we
spotted 30 plus Red Kites circling and
drifting past us towards Salisbury Plain.
Quite a sight.
On a very wet day at the end of January
six of us visited Michael Brake’s Farm
close to Dilton Marsh. The farm is on the
junction of Marley Chalk and Greensand
and is also on the watershed between the
catchments of the Bristol Avon and
Salisbury Avon where we visited several
sites to see these features.
