The group started life as ‘Welsh Beginners’ in May 2013. We are learning modern spoken Welsh. Our leader is not a native Welsh speaker but has learnt the language in evening classes up to about GCSE standard.
We are now using ‘Cwrs Sylfaen’, the second course book in a series of three for adults learning Welsh, published by WJEC (Welsh Joint Education Committee) and we are working through it at a leisurely pace, using the accompanying pack of exercises for homework. Most of the group are using the South Wales version but one member is using the North Wales version. The classes are lively and interactive (and fun) and we build in conversation practice and use other materials.
We meet every Thursday at St Paul’s Church in Hatfield Road from 10.30 am to 12 noon. Members pay a small contribution towards the cost of the room. There are currently seven members of the group. We have room for more members, but new members need to have a basic knowledge of the language.
