The first Amble of the year was on Thursday 16th. January.
It was very gratifying to see fifteen hardy members defy the horrendous weather forecast and turn up for our first Amble of the year. Once again we were lucky and it did not rain.
Soon after starting we had to make a big detour across a field to get around a flooded portion of the path, this should have acted as a warning because further on we came to another flooded area which was impassable. We retraced our steps and as an alternative had the opportunity to walk along the Stapenhill Viaduct and over Ferry Bridge - both masterpieces of Victorian Engineering. A quick visit to Stapenhill Gardens followed, “Don’t feed bread to the swans – cut grapes in half” the notice said. (At least we weren’t asked to “Peel me a grape” as Mae West commanded). Back over the river and then we rejoined our planned route along the riverbank, I estimate that the river was a foot higher than it was on the recce. We reached the carpark just before mid-day having covered about three miles.
Eight of us then had lunch at “The Lord Burton in Burton High Street.
Details of the walks are also posted on the notice board in Wilfred House.
Note that there is no group fee to attend this group.
