John joined the CPS in 1988 and prosecuted in both Crown and Magistrates Courts before taking up a variety of legal manager positions. After heading up the North West CPS Complex Casework Unit, dealing with some of the most high-profile criminal prosecutions, he spent 3 years in the North East as Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor. He took up the role of Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor in Merseyside - Cheshire in June 2017, before retiring in November 2018.

On 17/8/2022 in the first part of his talk, John will examine the role of the Jury in the Criminal Justice System and will explores the controversy around proposals to amend the Jury system during COVID. In the second part of his talk John will look at a recent case in the Court of Appeal in which the court had to decide whether a man who told a woman that he was infertile and then went on to impregnate her, was guilty of rape!.
