COVID-19 PANDEMIC latest

October 2021
A number of members have requested a return to cinema viewng and so, with decreasing Covid restrictions and increasing vaccination, I have decided to re-introduce the monthly cinema visit starting October 2021. However, for those still not keen to expose themselves to risk, I will also continue to look out for suitable Freeview films on the TV. In either case we will discuss the films by Zoom after the showings.

For those attending the cinema, I would strongly suggest that, while not manndatory, you consider wearing a mask when not eating or drinking, and doing a Lateral Flow Test before attending. You should not attend if you have symptoms or are isolating.

June 2021
Most cinemas including Southampton’s Odeon and Harbour Lights opened to the public on 17th May. But both have Covid-safe measures in place including limited seating, social distancing and a maximum of 6 in a party. Face masks are required at all times on the premises (unless eating or drinking) and toilet visits are restricted. You can, however buy and consume refreshments. Tickets are available on site but customers are encouraged to book on line or use contactless cards on site. For details see: https://www.odeon.co.uk/we-are-safer-cinema/ for the Odeon and
https://www.picturehouses.com/blogcovid-19-faqs for the Harbour Lights. My guess is that most members will not yet want to return to cinema visits in person – especially with the likely prolonged period of covid restrictions to be announced on June 14th. In the light of this I will continue to pursue our current monthly virtual cinema visits to a free-view TV film unless and until members indicate to me that they are keen to get back to the real thing.

April 2020
Due to the closure of all cinemas and restrictions on group numbers under the Coronavirus Regulations 2020, we have reluctantly had to cease our monthly cinema outings until further notice.

HOWEVER, so as not to let Covid-19 beat us, we have morphed the group into a VIRTUAL CINEMA GROUP.

Starting from 1st April 2020,The Group Coordinator will choose a film from the national TV listings and notify all group members in the usual way (email or text).

At a suitable time after the film the Group Cordinator will host a virtual group meeting on the video conferencing platform, Zoom.

Do you like going to the cinema? Would you enjoy discussing what you have seen with discerning friends? Are you keen to widen your experience of film?

The Cinema Group is open to any U3A member and will give you the opportunity to visit the cinema with friends and enjoy films new and old. Each month we choose a film to see (suggestions welcome) and a date and time for the group viewing will be displayed at the monthly meeting and on the website.

In general we go to Harbour Lights, Ocean Village, which has a comfortable bar, a sober clientele and a good membership scheme. However there are other local cinemas and we could also meet in one of our homes to watch a rented film.

We try to discuss each film afterwards at an appropriate opportunity. This could be at the cinema, a local bar or at a member’s home.
