Insurance Guidelines for Group Leaders

All fully paid up members* are covered under the U3A policy Public Liability insurance. Therefore, Group Leaders are covered against personal claims for injury & damage against them from any member.

Home contents are insured up to £25000 whilst hosting a group event in your own home.

Walking or similar activity groups – there is cover but it is not automatic. It is legal liability only. More information is available on U3A national office web site.

Electrical equipment testing – Group Leaders should check the conditions of any premises that are being hired.

Health & Safety at Work ACT 1974 – this does not apply to voluntary groups. Use common sense.

First Aid – there is not a requirement for a trained first aider to be present. A pocket guide will be supplied to all Group Leaders.

Risk Assessments – Group Leaders should assess any venue they use and take “reasonable precautions” to prevent an accident, based on common sense.

Transport in other member’s cars – this needs to be checked with the owner’s car insurance, especially if any payment is being made.

  • Visitors/Guests (maximum 2 times) are classified as Temporary Members and as such are covered under the Public Liability Insurance

Speakers – these are covered but not anyone acting as a paid tutor
