Psychology
This group started in 2023 after an initial inquiry established that over 20 members were interested in the topic. We meet in Cwmbran Library at 2pm on the first Tuesday of each month and usually have around a dozen in attendance. The meetings take the form of a PowerPoint presentation on a particular topic, with plenty of opportunity for members to contribute to the discussion throughout. We do not follow a specific syllabus, but much of the content is sourced through Open University material which has recently been studied by the group convenor. Copies of the presentation notes are emailed to members and available in printed form on request.
To date, we have discussed the various schools of thought within the discipline which have included
Biological Psychology
Behaviourist psychology
Cognitive psychology
Social psychology
Psychoanalysis and psychodynamics
Humanism and existentialism
Group members have shown tremendous enthusiasm for the subject and future meetings will be based on suggestions for topics from within the group. As the study of behaviour, psychology is a broad discipline with lots of opportunities to relate the content of discussions to both everyday experiences and broader social issues. Our group is friendly and welcoming, and no previous academic experience in psychology is required.
