History

Roman soldier The History Group normally meets at 2PM in the Hall at Llanyravon Methodist Church, Cwmbran, on the first Thursday of each month.

Guest speakers are invited to our meetings to speak to us on topics of historical interest.

Our main area of interest is in the industrial history of South-East Wales but we try to vary the subject matter in order to appeal to everyone.

Some of the topics have included:

  • The archaeological dig at Monmouth
  • Cathedrals and their construction
  • The Chartists
  • Bells and their construction
  • The international news agency Reuters

Some excellent talks have been given by our own members. These include one by two of our lady members one of French origin and one of Welsh. They provided reminiscences of their respective childhoods during World War 2 in occupied France and in Wales.

We also try to get out to museums and places of historical interest such as:-

  • The Roman camp at Caerleon
  • Caerphilly Castle
  • Abertillery Museum
  • Cardiff Castle
