The film for 16th Apr, is a golden oldie, ‘Atlantic City’ starring Susan Sarandon in her first starring role & Burt Lancaster in his last great role, considered a wonderful character study. The film is brilliantly directed by French Director Louis Malle, who draws the characters together in a community whose welfare we come to care about.
We see the Atlantic City whose good days are past, just as it is being rebuilt as an
Eastern Las Vegas. The older classical buildings are being demolished to be replaced by casinos that everyone assumes will bring prosperity back.
Sally (Sarandon) moves to Atlantic City to chase her dream of making her mark in the gambling industry. She meets Lou an old mobster & the two of them devise a plot to make quick money.
Lancaster, in a splendid performance matched by Sarandon, who works as a young
oyster bar employee & vulnerable, as is Lou (Lancaster) when he realises that he
cannot protect her from the villains whom both become involved with, in a real life
dangerous escapade.
A rough, tender & romantic film, involving love, money, dope & danger. The film
received 5 Oscar nominations & won 2 BAFTAS, one for best Actor & one for best
Director. Theme tune is by Paul Anka & original music score by Michele Legrand.
