The Philosophy group meets on the fourth Friday of every month at 10.30 am. We meet at each other’s homes in Tiptree.
As the group has no lecturer, every member researches the philosopher (or branch of Philosophy) we have jointly decided to study, at home - using the internet and whatever books are available, and contributes their 'piece of the jigsaw', as we assemble it in our group. (A useful 'starter' for beginners is the book 'Sophie's World' by Jostein Gaarder. It provides a brief summary of the lives and work of most major philosophers, although it is presented in the form of a novel.)
To date we have studied Plato, Aristotle, Seneca, Kant, Hume, Descartes, Berkeley, Confucius, AJ Ayer, Bentham, Montaigne, Wittgenstein, Nietzsche, Gender Issues, and many others.
